LIFE is LIVING establishes a new model for partnerships between diverse and under-resourced communities, green action agencies, and the contemporary arts world.

Since 2008, under the artistic direction of Marc Bamuthi Joseph, LIFE is LIVING has grown from a festival that uses art to foster environmental justice to a mobilized campaign much larger in scope. Highly successful LIFE is LIVING events have taken place in Harlem, Chicago, Houston, and Oakland, with further work proposed for Philadelphia, San Francisco, and the Twin Cities.
The campaign includes a traveling environmental caucus & concert, an invitational Graffiti Battle, live action sports, sustainable materials construction projects, and a Speak Green youth poetry event. As we reflect the voices of an emerging cultural majority, we recognize that our arts practices must echo and sustain the lives of the communities we engage.

Can a mother and daughter really share the closet?

Guerrilla Rep and Bindlestiff Studio are proud to present Kat Evasco in Mommy Queerest, written by Kat Evasco and John Caldon and directed by John Caldon. If Margaret Cho and Ellen Degeneres made a lesbian love baby, she would have nothing on this hilarious Bay Area actor and stand-up comic. Don’t miss Kat’s hard earned lessons on staying classy while ho’ing around, reverse colonizing America, and figuring out how to get your mom to come out of the closet.

Mommy Queerest begins with Kat having the earth shattering realization that she and her mother are both lesbian. Too bad her mom hasn’t figured it out yet—despite the fact she’s been living with her partner since Kat was six years old. After a spectacularly failed attempt to share this moment epiphany with her mom, Kat lurches through her own teenage sexploration with guys and girls, trying to figure out how she fits in with her family, community and self. After a decade of attempting to educate this wayward parent about what it means to be lesbian, she discovers there is still a thing or two she can learn from her mom.

Drawing on her experience as a stand-up comic and comedic actress, Kat narrates this unconventional coming out tale with sharp wit and unflinchingly honest self-revelation. She tackles conflict with humorous insight while illustrating the experience of being a Filipina lesbian, gay Christian, survivor of sexual abuse and young American who is just trying to get some. Kat says, “I have never revealed so much of myself in a singular body of work. I feel naked, like a burlesque exhibitionist exposing her everything, minus the grace, with a vulgar tongue. I’m airing my dirty laundry and it’s stank, but it’s mine. Oh, what the hell. I’m airing our dirty laundry, because if we don’t, that shit will stink. Cultural silence is non-existent in my world, and I support the Clean Laundry Act.”

Marga Gomez Mistress of Ceremonies

La Chica Boom is a queer multidisciplinary performance artist who combines comedy, physical theater, and burlesque. Chica has been listed in the Burlesque Hall of Fame, and toured North America with her witty ethnic drag and striptease. SF Guardian has named her a “pinata fisting provocateur” and Seattle Gay News says she is “political and sexy at the same time.”

Simone Campbell, the San Francisco burlesque scenes’ go to comedienne, dishes the shimmy-shake on any topic with quick wit and a killer smile. Simone is featured in the June issue of Curve Magazine.

Kat Evasco is a member of the Five Funny Females tour. She has played SF Comedy Clubs The Purple Onion and Club Deluxe and Berkeley’s La Pena. Kat is a fun loving Filipina on the verge of getting gay married.

Yuri Kagan works comedy clubs from coast to coast with his dry, observational, dead-pan comedy. Growing up gay in a Russian/Jewish-immigrant family adds to his comedic point of view.
TJ Kelsall -Originally from New Jersey, TJ’s comedy takes aim at the world through the eyes of a sarcastic cynical East Coast gay guy. He has performed at The Purple Onion, Rooster T feathers, and the San Francisco Punchline.
